In 2017, the Appalachian Harvest Food Hub expanded to include an Herb Hub in its Duffield, Virginia facility. Today, the region’s agriculture exists primarily in the larger valleys within the Ridge and Valley and Piedmont ecoregions, where level terrain allows for more intensive commercial agricultural operations. Currently, ASD has funding to help farmers establish, process and market forest botanicals in a forest farming system or field grown medicinal herbs in an alley cropping system. Sustainable agriculture entails a blending of traditional farming methods found throughout the Southern Appalachian region with the present scientific and technological advances of humankind. They account for the great diversity of plants and animals, the climate and soils, and largely for where people choose to live, thus shaping the cultural and economic aspects of the region.
