The final episode is where things get a little confusing and hairy because the way they shoot the final scene seems a bit out of left field. There are plenty of lives in the world that have been rocked by one grueling thing after another; I wouldn’t want to dismiss their experiences as unrealistic melodrama. It’s a shame that so much of I Know This Much Is True plays as miserablist melodrama, because Cianfrance has shown in the past that he can have a deft hand as an American tragedian.
